7zip is a archiving tool of choice for so many years already, that nobody even thinks about its compatibility with zip.exe. You sound like you've just left your cave after 10 years of absence in IT world. The easier it is for people to adopt and use your stuff, the more of the market you can capture. So stop complaining about 7zip developer not making 7z.exe not "compatible" with zip.exe, because you prove your plain ignorance about the topic. You're free to use 7z as well as zip format with 7z.exe, but 7z format introduces better compression ratio than zip. 7zip supports zip archives just for convenience of users. If you are the new guy on the block and want to take over where Zip left off, I'd think you'd want to make your product compatible with your main old competitor so that potential users would not have to re-code their apps and batch files to use your stuff."7zip has never tried to "replace" zip.exe - it tried to be a better alternative to winzip, and it succeeded very well.
